I begin teaching online the Summer of 2006 and will be teaching online courses both fall and spring semester. I hesitated at first for many of the reasons already stated. I currently serve as Merlot History Co-Editor. Merlot stands for Multimedia Education Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (www.merlot.org). It is centered with the University of California but it is an international consortium of 2- and 4-year colleges and universities offering ways to encourage faculty to use online materials in classroom, hybrid, and online courses. Membership is free. I have posted 80 assignments that I am using in my courses based on excellent websites in the history discipline. These assignments can be directly used or modified to suit needs. If you have questions you can directly email and I would be glad to discuss Merlot with you. My online classes assign work based on textbook readings, Merlot assignments, video/dvd assignments, and map exercises. I would be happy to discuss individually with anyone interested in my perceptions on classroom vs. online. No format is ideal to offer students all they we know and hope would benefit them.
