Harry, I am not sure if my situation is relevant to your question. I am a Full Time museum professional who teaches survey and museum classes at night. Most people on this list seem to be more in your position, which is a recent (or not so recent) PhD looking for primary work. That said, in my experience, and from what I have observed, it is all about networking. I got my current position because the Dean of Humanities at the college where I teach is actually a former docent of mine from a previous job. I have heard similar stories from people more in your position than mine. If you want to adjunct at a specific college, I would recommend showing up at their functions and meeting other faculty and administrators. You should also think about making meetings with specific faculty and administrators. Advertisements for positions will produce hundreds of applications, more if there are a number of graduate schools near the institution that needs faculty. You need something to raise your application above the others, and nothing beats the personal touch.
