Likely what has happened is that the registry and the backup copy of the registry have become corrupt, thus Windows keeps replacing the corrupt registry with a corrupt backup. I can think of two possible solutions. Windows creates a backup copy of the system section of the registry the first time Windows boots after installation. You might be able to make use of this to make the computer usable again. The second possibility is to reinstall Windows from the DOS prompt. Solution #1: 1. Start the computer, just after the system beep press F8 to display the boot menu. 2. Start the computer in DOS Mode. 3. At the C:\ prompt, type the following: CD \Windows ATTRIB SYSTEM.DAT -S -R -H REN SYSTEM.DAT SYSTEM._AT CD \ ATTRIB SYSTEM.1ST -S -H -R COPY SYSTEM.1ST C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT 4. Restart the computer. The computer may redetect hardware devices. 5. If the same error occurs, try Solution #2. If the computer starts Windows successfully, run Scandisk to check for disk errors. Solution #2: 1. Start the computer, just after the system beep press F8 to display the boot menu. 2. Start the computer in DOS Mode. 3. Make certain that the appropriate real mode drivers for the CD-ROM drive are in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files. Without these, you will not be able to access the Windows installation CD. 4. At the C:\ prompt type the following (assuming that your CD drive is D:): D: SETUP 5. Scandisk will run to examine the hard drive. After this completes, follow the on screen instructions install the new copy of Windows over the old copy (make sure that it will install into C:\Windows). If all else fails, you will have to start over with a fresh copy of Windows and reinstall all programs (MS Office and others). The last method will require the most time, so choose it as a last resort: 1. 4. At the C:\ prompt type the following (assuming that your CD drive is D:): MOVE C:\WINDOWS WINBAK D: SETUP 5. Scandisk will run to examine the hard drive. After this completes, follow the on screen instructions install the new copy of Windows into the directory C:\Windows (do not allow the setup program to select the C:\Winbak folder for installation). Good luck, Charles Hooper EDTECH has changed addresses. The new list address is EDTECH@H-NET.MSU.EDU. All subscription commands should be sent to LISTSERV@H-NET.MSU.EDU.
