That's not what I hear about upcoming versions so I'm surprised to hear that the MS folks propagated this at NECC. Check out Paul Thurrott's site for Windows 2000 information. In particular notice that MS is working on a new version of Windows to be a successor to Windows 98 that is tentatively labeled Consumer Windows. It will NOT be the breakaway from DOS that we had been led to believe in the past. Instead it will continue the Win9X kernel and provide support for 16-bit programs for many more years (DOS refuses to die! *;-) Windows 2000 Professional (formerly Windows NT Workstation 5.0) will be the successor to NT 4.0 workstation (and the NT name will be shelved) and it will be the mainstream Microsoft desktop operating system for businesses and power users. http://www.wugnet.com/wininfo/win2000/FAQ/ BTW...I am running Windows 2000 Professional on a dual boot with Windows 98 on my new Twinhead laptop and it does indeed strain a 300 Mhz machine with 128 MB of RAM. It runs well, but a faster machine and more RAM would be even better. Paul Thurrott recommends the 300 Mhz CPU and 128 MB of RAM as the barebones baseline for Windows 2000 Professional and I agree with him.
