Relative references in a web site would be links to, say, images\picture.jpg as opposed to c:\webstuff\newpage\images\picture.jpg You put things in places that could be called up from a "relative" location, rather than "absolute". In the above example, the current folder (directory) would have to contain the "images" folder. If the "images" folder were on the same level as your current folder, then use ..\images\picture.jpg which (by way of the two dots) tells the browser to look first to the parent folder (one level up), then look in there for the "images" folder, and inside the "images" folder, find the picture.jpg file Using the drive designation (c:, or whatever) along with the full pathname is called "absolute" referencing. In this case, no matter where it's called from, the reference (link) points to something on the c: drive. Not using the drive designation, but rather pointing somewhere "relative" to where it is being called from, is called "relative" referencing. Hope this helps clear it up.
