Are you running any software or system extensions that would make the computer try to connect to the Internet? I just saw this problem a couple days ago; the problem was that the user had turned Personal Web Sharing on in the control panel, and so the computer would periodically attempt to make a network connection. Other software can do this as well, including time-management and scheduling software that might be configured to make periodic network updates. Just some thoughts....
