Hi all, I tried a new computer repair shop for a memory check when I suspected that bad RAM was the source of too many crashes on my Pentium. Bad mistake, I guess. I barely escaped with my life and a new motherboard, RAM and CPU. Unfortunately my computer is still only marginally alive. They upgraded it to Windows98 in the process. At the shop, it acts OK (they say), but when I get it home, I get a blue screen message that says it's disabling all the 32 bit drivers because something is still in DOS mode -- so everything has to be in DOS mode apparently. Anyhow it changes all three hard disk drives/partitions to DOS compatability mode paging, says they need to be changed back (but doesn't say how). Also, and much worse, it disables both of my CD drives (or rather Win98 claims they aren't there.) At this point the repair shop is claiming no responsibility, but is charging me $55 every time I bring it in. They reset something in the registry that gets the CD's back. Then they reset something that gets the DOS compatibility mode off. They refuse to tell me with either setting is. Then they send me home. For awhile, if I didn't use my JAZ drive, everything would be fine, but it would fall apart with the fatal blue screen message when I used it. The last round, I brought in the JAZ drive, and the shop insisted they had it fixed to use that correctly too (I did run the latest IOMEGA update). Of course, they now suggest that what's required is formatting all my drives and starting over. Since they can get the CD's back very quickly with the registry change, and it appears to work OK then until WIN98 decides to disable the CD's again, I doubt the necessity of losing gigabytes of stuff. The problem is that I can't work on this myself without access to a CD drive. Can anyone tell me: 1. What I do to get the CD drives back, if Win98 "loses" or disables them. (They don't show up at all.) 2. How I get the regular drives not to do DOS compatibility paging. 3. Is there a book that I could get at the bookstore that would explain all this and how to fix it--especially the registry setting that would let it recognize the CD drives? (Or a Web page somewhere that would do it?) 4. Why do you think Win98 keeps turning off the CD's? It has worked at times for a few hours after I bring it home, so I'm at a loss as to which driver it's probably objecting too. Summer term is progressing, and I can't reinstall FrontPage98 to get my class web pages updated, so I'd especially appreciate any thoughts or help.
