I've been very familiar with ICQ, I keep thinking, until my children tell me about another feature about it I didn't know. Apparently you can click on the person's name or nickname in the contact list and read the history of all your messages back and forth. My point is, that we will always be behind in "staying on top of" this kind of softwares, so we had better use our strengths - our values and our house rules. Make up your rules when permitting children to use this software. I really don't think this software should be installed at achool at all. First, each person would have a list of contact people stored on a particular computer, and others could get on each other's list and pretend they were that person. Secondly, it is used primarily for social reasons much like the telephone. But these social reasons aren't bad in and of themselves, sort of like an electronic quilting bee. How marvelously intellectual do you think those were, either. Like any social activity it needs to be supervised and there needs to be some restrictions . But within reasonable parameters, it is really a nice piece of software, and can result in family gatherings in real time no matter the geography, with complete privacy, or wonderful collaborations. At school they should collaborate face to face. Joy Hogg -- Joy Hogg, St. Ann School, Cadillac MI EDTECH has changed addresses. The new list address is EDTECH@H-NET.MSU.EDU.
