1. The content of stand-alone Wordpress blogs can be exported (Tools> Export, I believe) and then imported into a new blog in Multi-user. As far as I know this has to be done in each individual blog (no mass import/export that I know of). I've done it a few times. 2. There are a number of plugins that will automate backup on a schedule of your choosing; I'd go to Wordpress.org and find one that suits your needs. I think I used WP-DB Backup to email a copy of my blog database to myself every week (note: most of the database backup solutions I've seen just backup the database tables which preserves text, page structure, tags, etc. but not uploads like pictures.)
