> From: Jim Beal <firstname.lastname@example.org> > > If Wikipedia would police itself, it would be a good place to practice > critical thinking and evaluation of resources. The CIPA issues and local > values that relate to it are still a major stumbling block. I was going to hold off on commenting anymore until I could write a synopsis of all of the comments. And with due respect to Jim some other technology directors have affirmed the problem he noted of teachers misusing the Internet for personal/entertainment activities. I would point out however, that this is a problem related to inappropriate reliance on the filter - because we know that Jim runs a "tight ship" so his teachers are engaging in such inappropriate activities with a very tight filter in place. Probably his students also. I call this "Internet recess" and note this is a result of the false security that has developed with the idea that it is possible to effectively manage student and staff misuse using filters. BUT have to admit this is the very first time I have ever heard the idea that it was necessary to block Wikipedia because allowing access to it would be in violation of CIPA. Sad to think of the hundreds of districts that are risking loss of erate funds because they have such stupid attorneys because they are allowing access to this porn site. Have to admit, I decided to try to figure out what part of the country Jim is from and to determine whether this had any bearing on this. Unfortunately, Wikipedia was not very helpful <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somonauk,_Illinois> However, I did not run into any porn on this page. Nancy -- Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D.
